  • PCGen - d20 Character Generator. Open source, free, cross platform.
  • E-tools - d20 Character/Monster Generator. Officially licensed with Wizards of the Coast. Windows only, Commercial ($30); additional datasets are extra. Publisher is constantly adding new datasets, trying to cover all WotC books. Datasets also cover some 3rd-party publishers, such as Sovereign Press (Dragonlance) and Kenzer and Company (Kingdoms of Kalamar). No longer available due to Wizards of the Coast not renewing the licence.
  • Jamis Buck's NPC Generator - Online NPC generator, compatable with D&D 3.5. Works in any web browser. Offline version also available (free, PC only).
  • HeroForge - Excel based Character Generator. (free, see here or here for download sites.)
  • Modern System Character Generator - Designed to save GMs time by providing a tool to quickly generate legal NPCs.

  • Hero Designer - HERO system character generator. Commercial ($25), java (Windows, OSX, Linux).

  • Heromachine - Flashbased character portrait generator. A demo version is available.
  • Whimsical Southpark Character Image Creator
  • Character Sketcher A portrait generator using vector graphics.
  • Character Artist Pro A portrait generator with Campaign Cartographer
  • Wizards DND portraits Wizards has DND character and NPC portraits online.
  • Neverwinter Nights Community The neverwinter nights modding community makes many character portraits for use in game.
  • Planet Baldurs Gate The Baldurs Gate/Icewind Dale modding community makes many character portraits for use in game.
  • WoW Model Viewer The WoW Model Viewer is a stand-alone program that reads the data files that are included with the game, "World of Warcraft". This program allows you to view models from the game, and does its best to try and replicate and emulate the models to look just as they would in-game. With the program you are able to create and edit WoW models, and make screenshots of them in many different poses. Requires WoW to use, but will work with any version of WoW patched up to the 2.0 version. You do not need to actually log into WoW to use the model viewer, just have the 2.0 version files on your computer to be accessed.

  • Deviant Art Deviant art has many talented artists who post to online communities. Always ask permission, most artists just like knowing their art is appreciated and will do custom pictures for free, or commission.
  • Elfwood Elfwood is a large fantasy and sci-fi themed art site. Always ask permission, most artists just like knowing their art is appreciated and will do custom pictures for free, or commission.
  • Flickr Many user posted photos, searchable by tags.
  • PD Photo Public domain photos for use. Searchable.
  • stock.xchng - Free stock photography.
  • Terragen Powerful 3d terrain generator, much like Bryce.
  • Soul Caliber An amazingly good resource is the Soul Caliber 3 in game character generator. It can be used to create multiple styles of medieval, anime, etc. based characters in 3D. The biggest issue with this is getting the screenshot off of your PS2/Xbox.

Mapping

  • AutoRealm - Clean, simple, easy to use map making software. Open source, free, Windows only.
  • Campaign Cartographer - Advanced CAD-based mapping engine. Steep learning curve, but extremely high-quality results are possible. Commercial ($39.95), many add-ons available for more $.
  • Dundjinni - Map/adventure maker that delivers high quality scaleable output for use in online or tabletop campaigns. The forum support from other users is unbeatable. Commercial ($40), PC & Mac.
  • Dungeon Forge - Free, PC only, easy-to-use map creation program. Fast and flexible, it can produce maps in the style of Dungeoncrafter and Dundjinni (as well as using the same range of art), and can be printed for tabletop use or used in online games.
  • e-Adventure Tiles Organizer - The e-Adventure Tiles Organizer is a web based application that allows you to create miniature maps based on the SkeletonKey Games' e-Adventure Tiles that you own.
  • Map Tool - A simple, powerful, and free mapping tool. Open source, ongoing improvements, works for every operating system.
  • Fractal World Generator - Online world map generator. Works in any web browser.
  • Random Dungeon Generator - Online dungeon generator, D&D 3.5 friendly. Works in any web browser.
  • RPG Map Share - A website with a multitude of maps and mapping objects. Many available for commercial use as well as private use.

  • OpenRPG - Online gaming tabletop. Chat, dice rolling, character sheets, reference, etc; all integrated. Open Source, cross platform. (wxPython)
  • Fantasy Grounds - Online virtual tabletop. Chat, dice rolling, character sheets, reference, etc; all integrated. They have a great website and support community. Windows only, Commercial ($35).
  • GRiP - Online Virtual Tabletop. Chat, programmable character sheets, pics/map/sound sharing and dice/card suite. Windows, commercial. Players client is free.
  • Role Playing Tools - Online gaming tabletop. Chat, token/mini creation, dice tools, map sharing, scriptable. Open Source, Java, Free!

  • DM Genie - DM Genie is a computer program for players and game masters running the Third Edition or the new Revision 3.5 of the world's most popular tabletop role playing game.

Wikis

  • TiddlyWiki - Personal wiki, hosted locally on your computer. Open source, free, cross platform.
  • PMWiki - A more detailed wiki requiring more advanced knowledge. Good for organizing campaigns or lots of information. Requires a server or the standalone (to run on your desktop) cookbook recipe which can be found on the PMwiki site. Free, open source, cross platform.
  • Gray TiddlyWiki - Derivative of TiddlyWiki with some slightly different features. Open source, free, cross platform.
  • TenFootWiki 2.0 - "a personal campaign notebook for roleplaying gamemasters based on the GTDTiddlyWiki implementation of TiddlyWiki. The object is to provide a fast, easy to use content management tool for gamemasters who use laptops at the tabletop." Free, cross platform, open source.
  • Wiki on A Stick - Another personal wiki, similar to TiddlyWiki, hosted on your computer. Great for USB thumb drives. Free, cross platform (requires IE or Firefox), open source.

  • JreePad - Heirarchical Notepad. Open source, free, cross platform.
  • KeyNote - Heirarchical, tabbed richtext editor. Free, open source, Windows
  • New Novelist - Excellent tool for writing your campaign or your novel. Commercial, Windows only.
  • Google Notebook - An online notebook where you can collect links, pictures and text. You can also share your notebook with others. Web based (Firefox and IE only), free.
  • Freemind - Brainstorming and writing tool. A pocket PC version is also available. Free, open source, cross platform.
  • OneNote - Hierarchical notebook that includes Tablet PC support. Good tool to store and access game/campaign information. Commercial, Windows

  • Google Calendar - Calendar Tool for Organizing Schedules. You can share your calendar with others. Also could be used as an ingame calendar. Web based, cross platform, free.

  • RPG Search Engine - A Role Playing Games Search Engine, for every game system and styles. Focused on table-top, P&P games, and electronic aid and resources. That tool can help you look for anything else you couldn't find here.

  • Place Names Generators - A generator that randomly create a name for fantasy locations
  • Crates content generator - Randomly generates contents of crates
  • Barrel content generator - Randomly generates contents of barrels
  • drow's Fantasy Name Generator - Online generator, fantasy and historical names, place names (castles, dungeons, towns, inns), etc.
  • Everchanging Book of Names - A shareware random name generator for Windows. It is very useful.
  • Adventure Hook Generator - Free generator of adventure and plot hook ideas. Web-based, works on all browsers.
  • Inspiration Pad Pro - Free random generator that uses text files so you can create your own tables. Easy and customizable. Win, Linux, CGI for web publishing.
  • Irony Games - A website with a dice roller, multiple random generators such as dungeon generators, npc, town, name, etc. Boasts the web's oldest dice roller.
  • RPG Inspiration - A website with multiple name, encounter, plot hook, and many many other generators. Name generators are by category, i.e. japanese, company, elf, dwarf, fantasy male, fantasy female, modern, etc. Also software for Windows.
  • Seventh Sanctum - Another website with a very large variety of generators, from Names to Lost Civilization Name to Realm Name to Martial Arts Moves.
  • Squid.org - Yet another website with name generators. Includes places and people for several different cultures and fantasy origin.
  • Tablesmith is a shareware ($10) program that lets you design your own tables using it's scripting format. The Tablesmith Yahoo Group has loads of tables for download to get you started. For Windows.

Repurposed Software

  • OpenOffice.Org - Office Software, including a spreadsheet good for simulating treasure/XP rulings
