(Abulia) Also, pick a gender for your GM and stick with it.

That was editing on my part, actually. My preferred mode on TT is to alternate, and Telas isn't referring to one specific GM, but to GMs in general -- which includes both men and women.

Gaming is a cooperative exercise, as such it demands cooperation in ALL aspects of play. Running a game does not make you the defacto leader.

I see where you're coming from in principle, but in practice I've found more often than not that the GM is the de facto leader when it comes to all things game-related. That's not true in every group (ours, for example), but IME it's very common.

I disagree with a large number of the points made in this post. (The GM has a larger say in the pizza selection? Come on.)

Thanks for the kudos. :D I feel pretty floored that this won, partly because I really respect the folks here at TT.org, and partly because so many of the entries were really good.

Please check them out here.

As a GM, you need to be aware of your players’ wants. Does this mean you need to give them exactly what they want? Not at all, but you do need to make sure they’re enjoying what they’re getting.

Bravo! Bravo!

Well done, Telas.

Nice guest post, I like the way you address the give and take that is inherent in both player and Game Master.

Great guest post!

In my gaming groups, I've found that the harder part is not so much "GM as leader" (that's usually a given, and if the GM leads poorly then he'll find himself out of the chair sooner rather than later), but "GM as diplomat."

While everyone comes to the table ostensibly to play the same game, everyone has different tastes and expectations. Keeping everyone entertained and involved requires a balancing/juggling act that I find more akin to diplomacy/negotiation than leadership (although the two frequently cross).
