Treasure Tables is on hiatus as of December 13th, 2007 -- after two years of daily posts, I needed a break. If you're looking for GMing material, I have two recommendations: the hundreds of posts in TT's archives, and my new project, the multi-author GMing blog Gnome Stew. Happy GMing! -- Martin
New Year’s Eve/Day in Your Campaign?
Mon. January 1, 2007
Happy New Year from Treasure Tables!
I hope you had a good night, whether you boozed it up or spent it on more nerdy pursuits. Alysia and I played boardgames with my gaming group and their significant others, which was a perfect way to spend New Year’s Eve.
Now it’s time to get back to thinking about GMing, though! So, a question — one I’ve never much considered in my own game:
Is the new year celebrated in your campaign? Both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day? What happens in your game world?

I have a calendar in my campaign, and I stick pretty tight to how long events take, what the current date is, etc. So when New Years came up in our game world, there was a New Years celebration, with our own custom traditions.
Can you share any details on those traditions, Phil? I’d love to hear how the New Year is rung in in your campaign.
I’ve always enjoyed the idea of holidays in games– heck, the Romans had over 100 that the rich celebrated– but I’ve never implemented them well. I’d also be interested in hearing about how they work into your games Phil.
This past year (2006), I incorperated the concept of a Festival/Feast of Fools into my game as a New Year’s Celebration. We gamed on New Year’s Eve (ringing in 2007 with dice) and I added the Festival as a backdrop to the festivities. It worked really well and I was able to work in a cool plotline with it as well!
