Treasure Tables is on hiatus as of December 13th, 2007 -- after two years of daily posts, I needed a break. If you're looking for GMing material, I have two recommendations: the hundreds of posts in TT's archives, and my new project, the multi-author GMing blog Gnome Stew. Happy GMing! -- Martin

Setting Stakes at the Campaign Level

Fri. May 5, 2006

Design blog attacks of opportunity recently covered an interesting idea: Campaign Stakes. Setting stakes — deciding what’s on the line, in other words — is common to many indie RPGs, and it’s a concept that’s very easy to drift to other games. I’ve never seen it applied on the macro-level before, and it’s definitely food for thought.

Under the Bed, by Joshua Newman, does this quite well, actually. His next game, Shock: also has a form of story stakes.

The concept behind UtB never grabbed me, but it might be worth checking out just for this aspect of it — thanks for the link, Ben.
