Treasure Tables is on hiatus as of December 13th, 2007 -- after two years of daily posts, I needed a break. If you're looking for GMing material, I have two recommendations: the hundreds of posts in TT's archives, and my new project, the multi-author GMing blog Gnome Stew. Happy GMing! -- Martin

Scenario Creation Basics

Sat. May 27, 2006

Reaching back to 2003, here’s a great article by Heather Grove on the essential elements of writing an adventure: Author’s Style Guide II: Adventure Writing.

And going back still further, to 1992, Writing for GURPS covers the most basic of basics (and not just for GURPS). Whether as an intro or a refresher, both are worth a read.

Her twelve part series, The Color of Adventure, does a great job of walking you through the basics of preparing an adventure– or a whole campaign. She discusses things that aren’t commonly mentioned, like the number of players you can handle, setting expectations for the players, and more.

Nice link, Scott — thanks! I hadn’t seen that series before, and it looks like good stuff.
