In d20, it would also be a good way to shore up imbalances in gear that have crept in over the past year of gaming, which could be handy. They were always remarkably silly (a departure from the normally serious gaming) and sent the PCs home with lots of Christmas loot.

Sometimes a departure from the norm is just the ticket — and making it an annual tradition sounds like fun. In d20, it would also be a good way to shore up imbalances in gear that have crept in over the past year of gaming, which could be handy.
